'Understanding Computers' and 'Pie &Pint Club'
these both had their first sessions last week and they both went really well! the Understanding Computers course has taken off fast that we had predicted, we already have a waiting list of around 10 people and currently have 6 tutors serving around 12 clients, how ever these numbers keep increasing by the week. It is a real encouragment to see the clients enjoyinging themselves with our tutors and also learning alot at the same time.
The Pie and Pint Club also started off well with 3 Gentlemen enjoying a great pub lunch together! we hope that this will also continue to grow as we put up posters and flyers in different places around the borough. Nathan Miles is currently overseeing the Pie and Pint club with Sam Jones, so we would like to thank them both, they are both very energetic and the Gentlemen who come along love having the there to talk to.

Pie and pint club
The Link has been working with Keith Saynor from Kings church wokingham to start a new initiative entitled "Pie and pint club", Keith Saynor recently wrote an article for the wokingham times concerning the initiative. It reads as follows:
"Following the death of my mum, my dad started to go to the local pub each week for lunch and a drink. He would meet some friends there and affectionately called this group “The old codgers.” They used to have a great time and met for several years.
I was interested to read recently an article in one of the national newspapers where a man had advertised for someone to take his dad out to the local pub. He had posted an advert that read: “Person to accompany elderly gentleman to the pub. Possibly two evenings a week. Probably two hours per evening. Seven pounds an hour plus expenses.” On reading this it struck me how fortunate my dad had been to have friends to drink with and how sad that this elderly gentlemen had no one to go to the pub with.
He, however, is not alone. I recently carried out a research project in Wokingham. One of the things the research showed is that there are increasing numbers of older folk in our community who are lonely and isolated, many of whom are living on their own.
God wants those who are lonely and who find themselves on their own to be included. (Psalm 68 v 6). Jesus on many occasions included those who might otherwise have been left out( Luke 19 v 1-10) and encourages us to do the same(Matthew 25 v 35-40).One of the ways we are looking to respond as a church community is to start a ‘Pie and Pint.’ Club, which will be held in one of our local pubs. This will be a good opportunity for retired men to meet others and enjoy a really good pub meal.
So, If you would like to come along and be involved with this “Old codgers group,” or you know someone who would please give me a call.

Scheme officially launched (June 08)
There was an offical launch of the extended Link Visiting Scheme on Wednesday 25th June at Woodley Age Concern Day Centre. The new Mayor of Wokingham Borough - Pauline Hellier-Symons was in attendance as well as around 100 volunteers, clients and representatives from various community groups, and elected members of town and borough councils. The evening included a fantastic barbecue, steel band and a 'roving violinist' who kept us entertained for the evening. We also had a rendition of a poem written by Cyril - one our clients - written about The Link Visiting Scheme. To read the poem, please click here.

Link Visiting Scheme announced as Mayor's Charity (June 08)
We are delighted that the new Mayor of Wokingham, Pauline Helliar-Symons, has nominated The Link Visiting Scheme as one of her two charities for 2008/9. This will provide a real boost to the scheme and will significantly increase our profile as well as providing additional necessary funds for specific aspects of our work such as running tea parties, trips out, and other special events. Please see the Mayoralty page on the Wokingham Borough Council website and clich on ''Mayors Charity'.
Three year's funding agreed (March 08)
Following a successful application to Wokingham Borough Council as part of their 'preventative care strategy', The Link is now in a strong position to move forward in reaching an increasing number of local residents in need of extra support and company. The funding will enable us to employ the equivalent of a full-time member of staff to coordinate the project.
