The detached youth work is the backbone of our work. It is the first point of contact and the most important part of the cycle that makes our work so unique.
There is a JAC team out in Woodley at least 50 weeks of the year; in most weeks there is a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night team working in different areas of Woodley. There are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday night teams in Earley. There are also teams out on Friday nights in Wokingham, Woosehill, Newtown and Whitley. The Crowthorne team is out on either the Friday or Saturday of each week. Our mobile vehicles, the Camels, are used for the detached sessions and also for the small group work in Waingels.
SCHOOLS WORK
JAC's school work involves teams holding small group sessions during school hours for senior and primary school pupils. The Emotional Literacy Programme runs for eight weeks during term time and includes topics such as self-image, anger management and disruptive behaviour.
JAC staff can also be seen engaging with students in after school detached sessions on certain days of the week.
FAMILY WORK
Even though it's original remit was for work with young people, there is an increasing need for JAC to ground this work in the family setting.
As well as parenting advice and family support , JAC has organised various family activities including self-esteem/social skills workshops, outward-bound activities, mums and daughters, and dads and sons activities.
EQUINE ASSISTED LEARNING
Our 4 horses Missy, Blue, Minnie and Stamper live at our stables in Arborfield. Small groups of young people and individuals visit to experience country life while helping with the day to day duties involved in looking after horses. Sessions are held every day, except Sunday. Young people enjoy helping the stable staff groom, muck out, feed and ride the horses. While students get used to being around our horses their self-confidence grows as they learn to control such powerful animals and as they work together there is a raising of self-awareness and self-learning. This has a knock-on effect on their self-esteem and other areas of their lives. There are opportunities for young people to volunteer and to do Stable Management training and NVQ in Horse Care with us.
