Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)
JAC uses horses for growth and learning. At our stables in Arborfield we offer opportunites for people work with horses at what level they wish to engage - from just enjoying time with the horses in an open space to learning basic horse care skills or gaining a qualification in Horse Care; from learning to ride to more intensive EAL sessions.
Those who are familiar with horses recognise and understand the ability of horses to influence people in incredibly powerful ways. Developing relationships, training, horsemanship instruction and caring for horses naturally affects the people involved in a meaningful way. The benefits of the work ethic, responsibility, assertiveness, communication and healthy relationships have long been recognised. Horses naturally provide these benefits.
Our stables yard is not a riding centre, although we do provide riding lessons by a trained instructor. However, most of our work is concentrated on working with the horses on the ground, giving young people and families opportunites to look after the animals and help in the work of the Charity by volunteering. Another important aspect of our work is our EAGALA sessions. Our trained EAGALA specialists enable participants to learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses and then process/discuss thoughts, beliefs, behaviours and patterns.
So why horses?
-
Horses require work - they require people to be engaged in physical and mental work to be successful, a valuable characteristic in all aspects of life.
-
Horses are very much like humans in that they are social animals. They have defined roles within their herds and provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning.
-
Horses are large and powerful, which creates a natural opportunity of some to overcome fear and develop confidence.
-
Horses are sensitive to non-verbal communication and respond to messages given in the moment which can be used to bring awareness of current patterns and motivate change to new ones.
Spending any time with horses, whether it be riding, leisure, or sport, is certainly beneficial mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. In addition the EAGALA experiential modality offers a powerful and effective approach that has an incredible impact on individuals, youth, families and groups.
