Woodley Youth News & Prayer Bulletin – April 2010

Thanks to all of you who support us either in prayer, financially or in any other way.

Youth work is an area that is often in a state of flux so we thought we would update you with recent happenings so that you can pray in a more informed way.

Ian – as you know – is now full-time. So what exactly does he do with all those hours?

Well we now have 4 main core youth groups and as anyone who has ever done youth work knows, it takes a considerable amount of time to plan a really good youth meeting, let alone keep up with all the pastoral care.

The four groups are:

Wave
A Christian youth group for school yrs 7&8s, full of games, activities, & learning – all aimed at exploring Christianity and growing in faith together.

Fish
A Christian youth group for school yrs 9+. Here we look deeper into questions of faith & Christian living through games, fun & discussions. This is also a place where the young people are encouraged to develop gifts, particularly in prayer & leadership.

Pathfinder Club
An open youth club for school yrs 6-9, with pool, table-tennis, table football, computer games & craft etc. We also go on trips such as to the woods or swimming. We do get very lively and challenging young people here! We now stay open after the younger group leave for the older teenagers to drop-in.

Wednesday Drop-In
Our newest club! A drop-in youth club for school yrs 10+, again with pool, table-tennis, table football, computer games & craft etc. Again these can be very challenging young people.

Below is an overview of all the groups running each week.

In addition to the main groups there are a number of spin-off groups in the afternoons working on issues such as truancy & self-esteem. On Fridays Ian alternates between Wave and JAC. Ian will also have on average 2 one-to-ones each week at the café with various young people who just want a chat. Ian is involved in all activities below except the Christian cell groups which are run & hosted by Church families.

Prayers of thanks

  • That Wave has got off to a great start.
  • Our application for a council grant for Pathfinder Club was successful so we received nearly £3,000 that was spent on sofas, bean bags, TVs & computer games.
  • Lots of opportunities in the spin-off groups to share the gospel and pray with young people.
  • For Emma, Ryan, Sam, Merryn & Greg from Fish who have all stepped up to leadership roles at Wave, Pathfinder Club, the Wednesday Drop-in & at Fish too.

Pray for

Fish
  • Leaders = Ian, Brenda Lord, Julia Featherstone, Andrea Abrahams; Jeremy Galpin, Chris Roxburgh, Rachel Burton, Emma Holmes & Ryan Galpin.
  • Ian is taking Emma & Merryn from Fish to Kenya this summer to volunteer at the orphanage he stayed out last year. Please pray for all the planning & practicalities. Also please pray that Merryn’s health improves for her to be able to go.
Pathfinders
  • Leaders = Ian, Brenda Lord, Rachel Hogg, Glenn Johnson, Andy Aitken, Sam Hoggard, Helen Philips, Rachel Townsend, Michaela Smith, Helen Phillips, Sam Driver, Ryan Galpin & Emma Holmes.
  • That the leaders will be able to get to know the kids and build up a good rapport with them.
  • This club needs a good ratio of leaders to children. Whilst we have a strong team, we sometimes find that a significant number of leaders are suddenly delayed or unable to get to club for very genuine reasons. Please pray that we able to open club at 7pm with enough adult support.
  • More meaningful conversations and prayer opportunities.
Wave
  • Leaders = Ian, Elaine Hawkes, Moira Astin, Emma Holmes, Ryan Galpin, & Merryn Robinson.
 The new Wednesday night drop-in
  • That we will be blessed with enough leaders.
  • That we get off to a great start!
