Young adults supported by local charity, Just Around the Corner (JAC) are seeing their confidence grow, running a market stall in Wokingham Square every Friday. Started on September 23, the stall was the idea of Chris Pape, Just Around the Corner (JAC) youth worker.
“This gives the young people a real experience of work, and allows them to build up to feeling confident to deal with the public. I am encouraging the workers on the stall to set it up and be proud of what they are doing,” explains Chris.
After a successful first month, Chris and her team of helpers are asking for donations of good quality items such as books/games, children’s clothes and general bric-a-brac to be brought along on Fridays and the team will aim to sell them.
All money raised will go towards the work of Just Around the Corner (JAC), the local charity, which has been running for 13 years. JAC was set up by youth worker Sam Milligan with the ethos of providing hope to young people in the community and enabling them to make positive choices by demonstrating love and acceptance according to Christian principles.
In recent funding cuts, JAC is one of many local charities to be affected with a £50K deficit in 2011/2012 and this stall will not only help to raise much needed funding, but will also raise awareness of JAC and what they offer.
JAC works with the young people of Woodley, Wokingham, Crowthorne, and surrounding areas as an outreach youth and community organisation. JAC volunteers are willing to put time and effort into getting alongside young people supporting them in making positive choices about their lifestyle and future.
The charity has since gone on to develop a network of volunteers across the borough who give between two and 35 hours of their time each week to provide youngsters with help, encouragement and support.
